I am blown away of how we are attracted to stories and images of sex, tragedy, and beliefs. Another celebrity sex tape and I am left wondering why such a story so important to the human population? Is it simply our procreative instincts kicking in? Or something deep down in us that reflects our species worldview?
Or maybe it is a welcome distraction… Maybe it is too much to ask to be curious why the president of the United States is in India, the impacts of a giant volcanic eruption in Indonesia, or debating melting over 3 million weapons currently held by Americans. When I compare and contrast events that may have a direct impact on my life, a celebrity sex tape doesn’t even register. I am impacted by trade agreements other countries. I am impacted by volcanoes spewing tons of ash into the atmosphere further the cooling of the planet. I am impacted by the fear in political discourse that may shape my kid’s future.
Neuroscience teaches us that the brain deliberately attempts to conserve energy at all costs. This means it does not naturally want to think about deep subjects. At most it wants to be entertained. But being entertained is not solving any problems. How do we pull ourselves up and out the muck and get to a space so that we can make the world better? I definitely believe that the first step is to stop caring about who is fucking who!
I take personal responsibility in this blog to attempt to elevate myself and those read it to analyze problems and think up solutions to be deliberately debated. Through the crucible of intellectual discourse and critical thinking we can refine our ability to communicate and solve problems. Otherwise we are reduced to our lesser instincts that focus only on sex and violence.
Here’s my call to action. Stop watching TV. Stop being sucked into things that do not matter. Stop comparing your life to people who are paid to live fake lives for entertainment.
Please do live a life of purpose. Your thoughts and passions will change the world. You are what’s important.
